In June 2022, Dr. Javed Khan OBE embarked on a review of  Britain’s  smoking landscape, and put forward recommendations which the U. K. Government agreed to work towards, with the main objective being to make Britain a fully smoking-free country by the year 2030.

Although this would deprive the British Government of some ten billion pounds of tax revenue every year, it was estimated that this would be more than offset by the seventeen billion pounds smoking costs annually – before accounting for the 2.4 billion pounds it costs annually for the NHS.

Of course this is only from a financial perspective. We also have to consider the trauma and heartache suffered by individuals and families through smoking related illnesses and deaths every year.

Dr. Khan’s study has also pointed out that a cigarette-free Britain would bring 2.6 million British adults out of poverty, along with 1 million British children.

Whether or not a smoking-free Britain is acheivable by the year 2030 relies on all of Britain working together, both individually and collectively. We can all make our MPs and local councillors aware of our thoughts on the matter, while clinics like the Complementary Medicine Centre can continue to run our Stop Smoking programmes, where we have found that hypnotherapy works better than other methods such as cold turkey, vaping or patches.

Individuals of course can help in this drive towards 2030 by making their own personal decision to become smoking-free. Without a doubt, if enough of us want to see a smoking-free Britain, it can be accomplished. All we have to do is put our shoulders to the wheel and each do our part, and this harmful habit can soon be history.
