“Homeopathy is based on an extended knowledge in the recognition and treatment of disease and the application of a therapeutic law.” (Taken from what homeopathy is doing in the National Health Service in Scotland published in 1953)

Homeopathy can be said to have begun in Glasgow in 1880 when a group of doctors came together to try homeopathy which they found to be both useful and effective.

This thoughtful and cautious initiative led to what became the Houldsworth Homeopathic Hospital based at number five Lynedoch Crescent.

It was established under the leadership of Dr. Gibson Miller opening in 1914. This was a post which Gibson Miller held until his passing in 1919 when he was succeeded by DR. H.Henderson Patrick. By 1931, the hospital had outgrown its Lynedoch Crescent beginnings, necessitating a move to larger premises at 1000 Great Western Road.

From that point onward, in terms of both practitioners and patients, homeopathy in Glasgow was to grow steadily until by 1953 when twenty thousand out-patient appointments per year were being allocated. This moving of the hospital resulted in the Lynedoch Crescent building becoming the dedicated out-patients clinic.

Continuing the success of homeopathy in Glasgow, in 1944 the Homeopathic Hospital For Sick Children was opened in Mount Vernon. For some years the two hospitals were run as virtually two separate establishments. That is until 1948 when homeopathy was enshrined within the NHS under the 1948 National Health Act of the UK Parliament.

Over a period of some 240 years homeopathy has been a significant healing discipline within Glasgow’s healthcare options.

Here at the Complementary Medicine Centre in Glasgow’s Park Circus, we are a multi-disciplinary natural therapy clinic which was first set up in Queens Crescent in 1986. In our homeopathy department we regularly hear patients coming to us for the first time saying  that they were first taken for homoeopathy by a grand-parent or other elderly relative when they were young, thus demonstrating Glasgow’s solid and continuing connection to the homeopathic medical tradition.

At the Complementary Medicine Centre the homeopathic department is run by Brian Fleming. Brian has more than thirty years experience in homeopathy. If we can help you, please get in touch today!
