During World War Two, there was a well-known saying:
“Careless talk costs lives.”
While that might have been good advice back then during wartime circumstances, things have since changed. Recent research at Harvard University has demonstrated that 28% of the therapeutic benefits of counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and several other psychotherapeutic disciplines, all come down to the simple fact that when a psychotherapy client is allowed to tell their story to a trained listener, they are likely to benefit.
Recently, I noticed a Network Rail Engineering truck sporting some interesting signage which read:
“Casual conversation saves lives.”
This truck and its message made me wonder just how many serious illnesses or even suicides could be avoided if more people would make the effort to communicate with their friends, family and colleagues.
A cafe that I used to often visit had a sign behind the counter which read:
“Commit spontaneous acts of kindness.”
Involving yourself in constructive conversation with your friends, family and colleagues surely constitutes as a spontaneous act of kindness with plenty of positive results.
Here at the Complementary Medicine Centre, we apply many years of experience in the natural therapies field as a foundation for our Talking Therapy sessions.
