HYPNOTHERAPY

Although the word hypnosis was coined only in the 19th century, hypnosis itself has been used for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. In fact, recently some ancient chambers were uncovered in Ireland which, it was found, resonated at 111 hertz, a frequency which helps people to go into a trance state.

In 1842, James Braid reported the use of hypnosis as an anaesthetic and so began the development of the practice of medical use. In fact, it was Baird who coined the word hypnosis. Since then a great deal of work has been done to develop the therapeutic use of hypnosis and most scientists today accept that it is a useful tool to communicate with the unconscious mind.

As most human behaviour is carried out unconsciously, even complex activities like driving a car, it is at an unconscious level that most negative behaviour occurs. Bad habits, phobias, even some illnesses, have their roots in the unconscious mind.

A skilled hypnotherapist will help someone to relax deeply and is then able to work directly with the person's unconscious mind to help them to change, even long-standing behaviours which they feel are holding them back in some way

Most hypnotherapy sessions last from 45 mins to an hour and most changes can be achieved in three or four sessions. In fact, sometimes one session is enough. It depends on the person. However, it is important to acknowledge that even the most skilful therapist has no control over anothers's behaviour. If someone does not want to change, change will not happen.
